Getting ready

Off-shore fishing can be physically demanding and you'll be up against mother nature as well as the fish. Here are some good rules of thumb.

  • Go light on the cocktails the night before. You don't want to have even a slight hangover in 3 - 5 ft seas. Trust me.
  • Get some sleep if possible. Off-shore trips can easily be 14 hours and the heat, waves and fish, make it a physical day. You'll need your rest.
  • There is a head on board but it's not the greatest place to spend quality time. Please remember that if you flush anything other than toilet paper, #1 or #2, the system needs to be taken apart to remove it.

Keep an eye on the weather

  • We need mother nature to cooperate, the Weather / Links page has an overview of what conditions we like to see and links to reports.

What to bring

  • Bring your own lunch and beverages. I recommend limiting the alcohol until we're headed back to port. We do have a microwave on board if you want to heat something up. Ginger Ale is a great drink on the ocean as the ginger tends to settle the stomach.
  • If you haven't been off-shore a lot you should consider taking some seasickness medication. It will make you sleepy, but better tired than sick. Your Dr can prescribe some good stuff and there are over the counter options.
  • Small soft side coolers are fine, we'll transfer items out of larger coolers
  • If you need to get sick, no loss of dignity there, just make it over the side of the boat.
  • Sunblock - for the obvious reasons
  • Camera - in case I forget mine

What to wear

  • Boat shoes, or white sole sneakers
  • Polarized Sunglasses
  • Hat or visor
  • Comfortable clothes, shorts, t-shirt, bathing suit. Catch your first bill fish and you will be going in
  • You'll also want a change of clothes if you're doing anything after fishing
  • In the fall, or if rain is forecast, dress in layers and bring something weatherproof.
  • *Note: The temperature tends to be accentuated on the water. Hot days are hotter, and cool days colder.

Be On time

  • Rarely is this an issue but it's always best not to keep the rest of the group waiting. Showing up a few minutes late is reserved for the captain.

What not to bring

  • No need to bring bait, tackle or any kind of fishing gear. If you have something you want to bring let me know first so we can plan on how we're going to use it, and where to store it.
  • If you have a large cooler we'll probably transfer the stuff into a cooler on the boat.
  • No Bananas
